Main Illustration – Speech Bubbles

The Kids:

  • “BUT WE’VE BEEN TAKING CARE OF YOU FOR YEARS!”
  • “WHO IS NATALIE?!”
  • “WHEN DID SHE BECOME YOUR FINANCIAL ADVISOR?!”

Mom and Natalie:

  • “NATALIE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO REALLY CARES ABOUT ME!”
  • “I’M JUST A GOOD NEIGHBOR!”

Other Text:

  • BILLS
  • BEST FRIENDS FOREVER! ♥
  • DONUTS from NATALIE xoxo

The Story – Four Panels

1. IT STARTS INNOCENTLY…

Natalie picks up groceries, brings over donuts, and checks on Mom.

2. THEN THEY BECOME FRIENDS…

Natalie takes Mom to lunch, shopping, and the casino because Mom deserves to have some fun!

3. SUDDENLY, NATALIE IS EVERYWHERE…

Natalie helps with mail, bills, appointments, and offers estate planning advice.

NEW WILL:

  • New Power of Attorney
  • Change Beneficiaries
  • Add to Accounts

4. AND THE KIDS ARE LEFT WONDERING…

Speech bubbles:

  • “HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?”
  • “IS MOM BEING INFLUENCED?”
  • “CAN WE DO ANYTHING?”

Sign: HOUSE TO NATALIE?!

Mom is angry with the kids and has changed her estate plan. Now the house, accounts, or other assets may be going to someone outside the family.

COMMON WARNING SIGNS

  • Isolation from family members
  • A new “best friend” who is always present
  • Sudden changes to an estate plan
  • Adding someone to bank accounts
  • Unexplained gifts or financial transactions
  • Increased dependency on a neighbor or friend
  • Anger or suspicion toward long-time family members

IT’S NOT ALWAYS UNDUE INFLUENCE

Older adults have the right to make their own decisions, even if their children disagree. Not every neighbor or friend has bad intentions, and many provide genuine kindness and valuable assistance.

The concern is when companionship becomes dependency, assistance becomes control, and someone begins benefiting from decisions the older adult may no longer be making independently.

HOW TO HELP PROTECT YOUR LOVED ONE

  • Have a current estate plan that reflects their true wishes.
  • Use a Durable Power of Attorney and Designation of Patient Advocate.
  • Keep lines of communication open.
  • Watch for changes in behavior, isolation, or suspicious financial activity.
  • Consult an experienced Michigan probate and trust attorney if you have concerns about capacity, undue influence, or financial exploitation.
